By all accounts an incredible pilot with a mischievous side, Mantz’s instructor wings were clipped by the U.S. Army after one such incident. He found work as a stunt pilot for Hollywood studios. After returning to the skies for one last stunt, he was killed while filming The Flight Of The Phoenix in 1965.
